Economic Demand Signals
Testing macroeconomic signals under forecast-safe constraints
- Question
- Do economic variables add forecast-safe information beyond seasonality and recent demand?
- Method
- Economic inputs tested for availability, independent information, and forward value.
- Evidence
- No defensible retained economic effect size or standalone holdout lift is reported.
- Decision
- Exclude economic inputs until forecast-safe evidence justifies the added complexity.
Business Question
Do economic variables add forecast-safe information beyond seasonality and recent demand?
Why It Matters
More weekly rows do not necessarily mean more independent economic observations. A monthly release repeated across weeks can make the apparent evidence base look larger than it is.
Data / Method
Candidate variables needed business plausibility, availability at the historical forecast origin, and incremental forward-forecast improvement. Chronology was preserved; revised or unpublished values could not safely stand in for real-time data.
Analysis
Five rows, one monthly observation
Conceptual frequency-alignment example · no empirical values implied
Repeating one observation across weekly rows does not create five independent economic observations.
- Economic measurement period
- Publication / release date
- Forecast origin: use only releases already available
Results
1 / Plausible
A credible business mechanism.
2 / Available
Known at prediction time.
3 / Useful
Improves forward forecasts.
Interpretation
Economic features were excluded from the final frozen model. Limited effective sample size, publication-timing uncertainty, and insufficient incremental gain did not justify extra complexity.
Limitations
Revisit with publication-vintage data, a longer history of independent economic cycles, and a forecast-safe lag structure. The sources do not report a defensible retained economic effect size.
How this fits into the forecasting system
Rejected candidate features: this study establishes temporal validity and data-quality gates for external inputs.
